Fractional DS1 lines are less expensive but have a fraction of the capacity of a full T1 line. Because fractional DS1 has the advantage of being repeater driven, it is far more available than DSL lines. Fractional DS1 can be provided to virtually any address in the continental US. Fractional DS1 can be provisioned many miles from the central office. Another advantage of fractional DS1 is that it is far more stable and reliable than DSL, and is often provided with a service level agreement which guarantees it’s reliability. For these reasons, fractional DS1 is a great option for small businesses for which it is essential to have a dedicated (not shared) line, which is very reliable, has guaranteed bandwidth, and/or which need high speed internet but are beyond the reach of DSL. Fractional DS1 lines are commonly confused with burstable T1 (can “burst” up to full T1 when needed)
and integrated T1 (can provide multiple services over one T1 line), but actually has different capabilities.
